Alvarado Parkway Institute (API) provides personalized behavioral healthcare services, specializing in treatment for mental health, substance use disorders, and dual diagnoses.
Our outpatient offerings include a structured partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Inpatient care is provided through psychiatric hospitalization services. PHP and IOP services are available at our San Diego and El Cajon locations, with PHP, IOP, and psychiatric hospital care available in La Mesa.

Benefit from Behavioral Health Treatment
In providing treatment for mental health, addiction, and co-occurring conditions, our vision is to be the leading provider of excellent behavioral health services to the San Diego community and beyond.
To support our clients, we offer a full range of behavioral health services, incorporating various treatment modalities. Care is available for mental health challenges, substance abuse, and dual diagnosis, also called co-occurring disorders, which involve the presence of both a mental health condition and substance abuse.
Mental Health Issues
We treat anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Substance Abuse
Treatment is available for alcohol addiction, opioid use disorder, prescription drug addiction, and other types of substance abuse.
Co-Occurring Disorders
Treating a mental health issue and substance abuse concurrently can increase treatment effectiveness for both conditions.
Outpatient Behavioral Healthcare Services
Our outpatient services include two programs: a structured partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).
Both programs offer individuals at-center treatment for mental health conditions, including mood disorders, and substance abuse. Clients participating in outpatient services receive treatment during the day but do not stay overnight at a care facility.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
The partial hospitalization program services offer the highest level of treatment acuity within the IOP category of care.
Provided for individuals 18 and older who are dealing with a mental health condition or a substance addiction, our PHP program is offered five days per week. An objective of the program is to provide support that allows patients to maintain involvement in other aspects of their lives.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Psychological, medical, and educational services are part of our treatment offerings in the intensive outpatient program.
IOP services from Alvarado Parkway Institute include:
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): This approach is to help individuals accept thoughts and feelings and to exercise mindfulness strategies.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): A type of psychotherapy, CBT gives attention to the connectedness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
- Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) skills: We help individuals develop DBT skills, which deal with emotion and distress management.
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR): Meditation, deep breathing, and yoga are used to help individuals dealing with various challenges.
- Seeking Safety: A trauma-informed therapy, Seeking Safety gives attention to safety from traumatic events or substance abuse.

Inpatient Psychiatric Hospital Care
Individuals receiving inpatient treatment are provided around-the-clock care at our La Mesa psychiatric hospital. Inpatient services are for client stabilization before further treatments or for helping individuals re-integrate into their day-to-day lives.
Psychological, medical, and educational services are provided through inpatient care, with treatments available for individuals with severe mental health conditions, substance use disorders, or co-occurring disorders (dual-diagnosis).

Customized, Quality Care in Southern California
Whether individuals receive inpatient care for acute conditions or intensive outpatient care, including partial hospitalization services, API is focused on providing customized, quality behavioral health treatment.
Services are provided from three Southern California locations. IOP services are available in San Diego and in El Cajon, with IOP and inpatient services offered in La Mesa.

SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD) PROGRAM
Outpatient services also include our Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Program, an abstinence-based service available to clients receiving IOP or PHP treatment. SUD program sessions last eight weeks.
Professional Behavioral Healthcare Services
The professional care available from API is offered within the structure of a behavioral health system that can enhance and streamline treatment. Our professional care also includes specialty services to provide care to specific populations.
A System of Caring
API is part of a network designed to help clients progress through stages of treatment as they move forward to recovery. This system of caring includes inpatient hospitalization services, outpatient care, counseling, pharmacy services, and more. Learn more about our behavioral health system.
Specialty Services
Outpatient services for seniors are provided at our La Mesa and El Cajon centers. Another offering is our Rising Above Disabilities program. We also offer services for first responders, including treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.
