What Is Detoxification?
Detoxification is the process of clearing harmful substances from the body. When a substance such as alcohol or an opioid that an individual has become accustomed to is removed, the body works to readjust, causing withdrawal. Detox is for withdrawal management and is important to sobriety as an initial stage of recovery.
What to Expect During Detox
During detox, individuals may experience withdrawal at varying intensity, some with mild and others with more severe symptoms. Presented below are some of the withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol, benzodiazepine, opioid/heroin, and stimulant addiction.
Alcohol
Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal last 5-7 days and include depression, anxiety, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, seizures, and tremors.
The onset of alcohol withdrawal symptoms begins about 24-48 hours after a drop in blood alcohol content (BAC).
Benzodiazepines
Nausea, vomiting, anxiety, cravings, hallucinations, muscle spasms, and heart palpitations are among withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal may last a few days or many months.
Symptom onset occurs 6-12 hours following the last use, with symptoms peaking two weeks afterward.
Opioids/Heroin
Lasting 4-7 days, opioid/heroin withdrawal symptoms start within 24 hours of the last use.
These symptoms include rapid pulse, insomnia, enlarged pupils, muscle spasms/cramps, and high blood pressure. Other symptoms include stomach pain/cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Stimulants
The onset of withdrawal symptoms varies by stimulant type, but may even begin within hours of the last use.
Symptoms last 3-4 days and include insomnia or restlessness, depression, paranoia, fatigue, nightmares, agitation, and discomfort.

Ideas for Managing Detox
The process of detoxification can be challenging, and API offers ideas for detox management. For dealing with physical discomfort during detox, API suggests rest, medication, healthy eating, fluids, exercise, support, showering, and intentional breathing. For dealing with cravings, API recommends writing a letter to yourself, meditating, and reading a book, among other approaches.
DETOXIFICATION SERVICES FROM API
API offers inpatient detoxification services that include the detoxification itself and relapse prevention treatment. Our team offers support and 24-hour supervision during the detox process and discharge planning to help individuals move forward with success.
Participants in our detox program are encouraged to attend daily recovery meetings—we offer Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and SMART (Self Management and Recovery Training) Recovery meetings—and to complete relapse prevention or wellness plans.
Detox services are provided for the various substance addiction disorders we treat:
Alcohol: Alcohol addiction affects the liver, heart, and brain, and is associated with violence and other serious issues.
Prescription drugs: Use within and outside of a doctor’s prescription can lead to addiction. This includes addiction to opioids, benzodiazepines, amphetamines, sedatives, and muscle relaxers.
Opioids: Heroin, Oxycodone, Percocet, and fentanyl are all in the opioid category. Opioid addiction is connected to physical, behavioral, and psychological problems.
Cannabis: Marijuana is the most common type. The clinical definition of cannabis addiction is cannabis use disorder (CUD).
Crack/Cocaine: Cocaine is a stimulant that leads to high dopamine levels. The use of crack/cocaine can lead to stroke, heart attack, and sudden death.
Inhalants: Breathing in chemical fumes can cause sudden death and brain, nerve, liver, and kidney damage.
Synthetics: Lab-made drugs, synthetics include Spice and K2. Synthetics can be much stronger than substances they imitate.
